Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitch on Friday to tackle one of the biggest conversation topics of the week – Wall Street.

Following the Wall Street fiasco from the GameStop (and other companies) stock roller coaster, fueled by a Reddit community, Ocasio-Cortez spent her stream talking with experts about the subreddit WallStreetBets’ big week.

One of her guests was Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian who went on an odd rant, properly called out by Kotaku, about the difficulties of being poor….while being worth around $70 million, according to Forbes.

While informative, and certainly worthwhile.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about these stories,” Ohanian said (h/t Kotaku’s Nathan Grayson). “There are deeply, deeply personal stories being shared about entire families cramming into studio apartments. And, you know, the aftermath of 2008, I’m thinking a lot about a generation—let’s go with millennials in particular. I’m at the upper end of it because I was born in 1983, so I’m just barely [a millennial].

But I came of age right before 9/11. I was a freshman in college. I remember in those years that followed, a lot of us were watching as we were told one thing about expectations of WMDs and led into two foreign wars, and our questioning of really important institutions started to begin.”

“With an economy in ruins, many were saddled with student loan debt,” Ohanian said.

“And many worked their butts off and were told by well-intentioned family members, society, everyone, ‘Look, if you just work really hard, get good grades, go to a good school, you’ll have a great job. You’ll have a good, middle-class life.’ That was the story everyone was told. And they’re looking around going, ‘I did it. I did all the things. But there’s no job for me.’ And especially at a time, this is more coincidentally, as software and technology really started eating the world, those skills started becoming really valuable—other skills less so.”

“Institutions really consistently let a generation down at a time when technology with an amazing user experience and the community helped us be better and better,” Ohanian said. “I learned most of my best dad tricks from strangers on the internet—no offense to my dad… I think, at the end of the day, the millions of connected brains are always going to be better than the few, and I think, I hope, the way forward is for better things—for better businesses, for better investing, for better education, for better all the things.”

“And the one theme that continues to show is this intersection with community and technology, and now it’s been infused with capital in a way that I think is just getting started,” Ohanian continued. “And we’re already seeing it in alternative assets, whether it’s people trading sneakers or buying and selling trading cards, or obviously cryptocurrencies. We’re seeing all these new ways to opt into investing that there’s no script for. But it only works in a world where you have so many people who feel disenfranchised with the status quo and a trust, actually, a really great trust in one another—even when ‘one another’ might be a stranger on the internet.”

Grayson’s article provide reaction and a breakdown of what is being said by Ohanian, and calling out some of Ohanian’s comments.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has had quite the successful debut on Twitch, and recently completed a coronavirus livestreaming charity event that raised over $200,000 for COVID-19 relief, but now she is looking to bring more members of congress to the Amazon streaming platform.

Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has already played with Ocasio-Cortez, but that is just the beginning for AOC, according to TMZ.

“It’s funny because the week after we did it, a lot of my colleagues were like, ‘My kids were watching this, and what is it?'” Ocasio-Cortez said to TMZ (h/t cNet). “Twitch is like, really new to a lot of people, and especially new to my colleagues, so I’m excited! Maybe we’ll be able to have some people on.

“We’ve had a lot of people reach out,” Ocasio-Cortez said, mentioning two new members of Congress specifically.

According to the CNet report, Representative-elect Cori Bush of Missouri is interested, as is Representative-elect Jamaal Bowman of New York.

“But I’m down to play with anybody,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been one of the fastest rising new stars on the Twitch streaming platform, finding incredible success streaming games such as Among Us, but she apparently has plans to expand the content offered on her official Twitch channel.

During a stream back on November 27th with Jagmeet Singh, among others, Ocasio-Cortez said that she’s working on the idea for a show where she interviews different political figures or content creators, while playing games on Twitch.

“So, I’ve been thinking about like picking out a game or even learning a game if the person I am interviewing is already very much into a game, and playing with them on a semi-regular basis, or a new person every week or month.” she said during the stream.

At this time, there are no further details regarding the show’s format or launch.

The United States Army may have collected a win when Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tried to pass a bill banning them from using streaming platforms such as Twitch for recruiting, but they have a long way to go in repairing their image among gamers and Twitch streamers as they will be returning to Twitch following a month away.

According to a statement emailed to Kotaku, the esports team is making it’s way back to Twitch and unbanning users, for now.

“The U.S. Army Esports Team is reinstating access for accounts previously banned for harassing and degrading behavior on its Twitch stream,” reads the statement. “The team is reviewing and clarifying its policies and procedures for the stream and will provide all who have been banned the opportunity to participate in the space as long as they follow the team’s guidelines.”

The U.S. Army is clearly sticking to their guns that the aforementioned “harassing and degrading behavior” were valid claims, when in actuality it was viewers asking about the Army’s history of war crimes. Regardless of their position, legal organizations like the ACLU and the Knight First Amendment Institute claim that the bans were violations of free speech laws seeing how the Army is an extension of the United States government.

We will see how things play out this time, but it doesn’t seem like the channel’s issues will be going away anytime soon.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a riveting speech in her efforts to impose a ban on the United States military from using streaming platforms such as Twitch as a recruiting tool.

The ban failed a house vote on Thursday, but had it passed there would have been an amendment to the House Committee on Appropriations bill, part of the process in how the Pentagon’s annual budget is set.

Although she lost in her bid, she chalked it up to Congress just not understanding what exactly Twitch is, “Imagine trying to explain to your colleagues who are members of Congress what Twitch is” she stated on her official Twitter page.

“It’s totally fine if you don’t know what Twitch is” she continued. “But tech literacy is becoming an growing need in Congress so we can legislate to protect people’s privacy, etc.”

“When our legislative bodies aren’t sufficiently responsive to tech, then that means we don’t have the tools required to protect people. This is partially why companies know way more about you than you may even be aware of – bc it’s legal, and Congress is struggling to keep up.”

Despite the defeat, she found a silver lining in the process.

“The good news: a majority of the Dem party supported this amendment” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “That’s a really solid start for this being the first time this issue has been brought before Congress. We’ve made great strides since *that* Senate FB hearing, but we’ve got a lot of room to still improve!

You can check out her speech below.

After the initial fiasco that saw trolling put a pause to the Twitch streams of the Navy Esports Team, they will be resuming their streams on Twitch.

Goats & Glory will resume streaming on the Navy’s Twitch channel Friday night. This comes after claims surfaced that the esports team was violating free speech by banning chatters who raised questions about war crimes.

Rear Adm. Dennis Velez, the head of Navy Recruiting Command, decided to pause the streaming back on July 23rd as Velez said that users were “spamming” the Navy’s channel.

“There were a few folks who are going [into the channel] and just bringing up issues … not allowing conversations to take place,” Velez said, according to Military.com. “These are young sailors on the channel, and we wanted to make sure that they were comfortable.”

The fallout led to claims that of possible First Amendment violations.

“We follow the Twitch rules for moderation,” Velez said. “You have to have some policies in place … on moderated discussions [because] it’s pretty easy for anyone to hijack the conversation and not allow people to ask questions.”

While new in the world of esports teams and esports players, the Navy has had to clarify what their intentions truly were, and they claim it isn’t to recruit people, but for the sailors streaming to inform young people about life in the Navy and the military lifestyle.

If you were to watch one of our streaming sessions, you would see a sailor wearing a Navy esports jersey with the Navy logo on the front and the American flag on the back,” Velez said. “… As they’re playing a game, they’re having discussions with fans and the folks that are watching. They are there to answer questions about the Navy.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, unsuccessfully tried to impose a ban on the military using services and platforms such as Twitch as a recruiting tool, but she was right on the money that that kind of activity needs to be kept away from platforms.

“These are not education outreach programs for the military,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“At the end of the day, the most important thing is allowing young sailors to talk about the things they have done,” Velez said. “It’s a powerful way to communicate to people that may not know anything about the Navy.”
