Facebook Gaming took another step forward in their mission to provide music streaming protection to their Level Up Creators against potential issues with the Digital Media Copyright Act (DMCA).

Level Up Creators, which are a tier below Facebook Gaming Partners, will now find way to stream copyrighted music in the background during their live broadcasts, as Facebook Gaming has expanded it’s massive efforts to provide solutions against DMCA strikes.

DMCAs have remained major issues for platforms such as Twitch, but Facebook Gaming has been working on solutions for their content creators for close to a year since they officially announced that they were working with top music labels to provide streamers background music for their channels.

Facebook Gaming has had a notable 2020, from acquiring Microsoft’s Mixer streaming platform, to evolving it’s gaming and streaming section to compete directly with the likes of Twitch and YouTube, Facebook has gone all in with the streaming platform.

As we head to the end of the 2020 year, it seems that Facebook’s investment in the streaming side, has paid off as they have seen incredible jumps in their viewership numbers from last year.

According to StreamElements and Arsenal.gg, Facebook Gaming has again surpassed over 300 million total hours watched on it’s platform for the month of November, just as they did every month since April 2020.

The big numbers demonstrated an increased viewership by well over 100% since this time last year, and while the numbers dipped from September’s personal all-time record numbers (and also dipped slightly from October), it is still incredible news as Facebook eyes 2021.

Facebook Gaming has been slowly building momentum since the shutdown of Mixer earlier this summer, as they have seen impressive results since taking in Mixer following the shutdown.

According to The Verge (via StreamElements), Facebook Gaming reached 346 million hours watched in the month of August, which is a million more than the month before.

Facebook Gaming has seen a whopping 179% increase year-over-year, which is boosting them closer to YouTube Gaming, which posted 461 million hours watched in April this year.

The platform can thank games such as Fall Guys and Among Us for the boost, as the two titles have been among the most-watched games across all major streaming platforms, including Twitch.

Following the shutdown of Mixer, streamers from the Microsoft platform were given an opportunity to move their brand to Facebook Gaming channels, although a number have since moved to Twitch.

The pandemic certainly hasn’t slowed down the incredible momentum that Twitch has built over the past few years, in fact it has been the catalyst to it’s continued record viewership numbers.

According to a report from StreamElements and Arsenal.gg, Twitch channels saw viewership grow to 5 billion hours watched between the months of April and June, marking a massive increase from Q1 2020.

The numbers also show more than a 60% increase in viewership, over the same three month period during the 2019 year.

However, Twitch was not alone in the boosts, as Facebook Gaming saw a 75% viewership increase over the quarter and a 200% increase from year-to-year, boosted by the shutdown of Mixer, who pushed streamers to the Facebook Gaming platform.

Despite shutting down officially on Wednesday, Mixer was probably hoping that they would see more of their streamers jump over to Facebook Gaming, but instead the last day of Mixer saw a lot of plugs for their streamers’ move to Twitch.

Not exactly what Mixer, who had tried to go head-to-head with Twitch, or Facebook Gaming, who was likely hoping to land a bunch of top tier streamers with the shutdown, was expecting.

Instead, according to Engadget, the final says of Mixer saw streamers pushing their viewers, subscribers, and followers to their new twitch channels.

Following the announcement that Microsoft’s streaming platform Mixer would be folding, and merge with Facebook Gaming as a result, the streaming industry has been wondering where Tyler “Ninja” Blevins would land now that he is essentially a free agent.

Earlier this week, Ninja made both a test stream and a live stream, playing Fortnite, on his official YouTube channel, leading many to believe that he would indeed end up on YouTube, easily the biggest competitor to Twitch.

However it appears that Ninja’s next destination has not been decided officially as of yet, and Youtube, Twitch, and Facebook Gaming are all in on trying to land one of the industries top streamers.

According to Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern, it’s a three-horse race between Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming to sign Ninja, with a deal expected to be finalized by the end of the summer.

On the surface it would seem that Twitch would hold the edge in negotiations. Not only do they present more monetization opportunities, directly on stream, than YouTube or Facebook Gaming, they also have history with Ninja.

Despite a rather bitter exit, Ninja did establish his brand on Twitch, and he is considered to have run one of the most successful and popular Twitch channels the platform has ever seen.

It can also be argued that Ninja was the catalyst for a lot of Twitch’s boom in popularity, as well as the industry’s biggest crossover star, creating more visibility and financial opportunities for streamers around the world, and across different platforms.

In fact, when Mixer initially signed Ninja to an exclusive contract a year ago, it spurned activity from all platforms to starting inking their most popular streamers to exclusive deal, creating even more business, and more profitability for content creators.

While Ninja didn’t help Mixer from the eventuality of folding, a lot can be blamed on the contract structure, and how Mixer conducted business. Judging from how things ended for the once-promising platform, it’s fair to come to the conclusion that Microsoft had no clue how to manage, or develop, a successful online streaming platform.

Now it comes down to who will offer a combination of money and opportunity, as the three biggest platforms try to reel in what is easily the industry’s biggest free agent.

Wherever Ninja lands, it will set off another wave for the industry, and can show the power of free agency in the realm of content creation.
