“No one’s gonna stay on top forever, especially when it comes to live-streaming; there’s always somebody new and hot,” Blevins said during an interview with the Washington Post. “I have no intention of being that guy anymore. I know I’m not going to pull 100,000 viewers on [Twitch] anymore. I don’t have time to do that. I have a wife, I have a family.”

Ninja has voiced his frustrations with fans being hyper focused on analytics, but he says he is learning to adapt.

“[Fans] are focusing on what they can see in front of them, which is numbers and ‘Ninja isn’t getting 100,000 viewers anymore,’ but what they don’t see is everything we created while we were massive and [the] global recognition we have that’s bigger than just streaming on Twitch,”

“I have been doing ‘Fortnite,’ which is obviously what blew me up, so it’s great that I’m starting to enjoy the game [again] and can stream it and play it and just have fun,” Blevins said. “But whenever I want to play any other game, I can switch to that and know that it really isn’t going to affect anything on the back end with deals or anything. It’s incredibly relaxing to be able to play what I want.”

Ninja has cut down on the hours he streams as well, long past the days in which he would consistently clock in 12-16 ours a day back in 2018.

“Back in the day, when streaming wasn’t really mainstream, there weren’t a lot of things to do other than stream, right?”

Ninja also knows that non-gaming content is creating new stars on Twitch, and has been struggling to find where to expand his current content offerings from just gaming.

“Literally that’s the reason I’m kind of stuck, or where I’m at right now,” Ninja said. “I love gaming, and I’m always gonna love gaming. I don’t want to be a react streamer where I sit and watch videos for eight hours. I start my stream, and I’m immediately in a game. Stream goes live, intro’s out and I’m queued up. I’m playing. That’s all I want to do.”

Creators will also be happy to learn that Streamlabs is not taking a cut from payments.

“In terms of payments, the money is transferred directly from you to the creator’s PayPal account. We’ll never take a cut, and we’ll never hold on to your money.”

Following the Activision-Blizzard lawsuit and with the disturbing new interview with Sweet Anita highlighting the conduct and constant sexual harassment that female streamers and content creators have to put up with in the industry, Pokimane brought up the recent tweets in response to former professional Hearthstone player Rumay ‘Hafu’ Wang, who claimed that Blizzard let let a WoW compete under a name that targeted her back in 2008.

One particular viewer was in chat and received a ban, only to donate moments later and threaten to unsubscribe from Pokimane’s channel if she did not lift the ban. Pokimane took aim at the viewer after discovering some of his disturbing comments in her chat.

“You are exactly the kind of person we don’t want in my community or in the greater gaming community at all,” Pokimane said, during the live stream on July 29th (h/t Dexerto). “It is not just a joke to call someone who’s underage hot and justify the fact that people are saying they were going to sexually assault them. Also, it’s not okay to, instead of apologizing for your shi**y comments, to try to flip it and call me or my mods boring for ‘not getting the joke.’ You are so oblivious to your own problems, it’s painful.”

“You think I give a f**k about your $2 sub? You think that’s going to make me think that what you’re saying is ok?” she continued. “I hope you get banned off this whole platform my guy.”

It’s yet another disturbing example of how the industry and culture is for a number of women streamers, gamers, pro players and content creators, a trend that needs to stop but seems to be continuously excused by big brands and companies.

In the deal, Rolling Stone will launch a new channel called ‘Rolling Stone on Twitch’, which is set to officially go LIVE on March 1st, and will broadcast for several hours a day, five days a week, with content featuring intimate live performances from established and up-and-coming musicians.

The Rolling Stone Twitch channel will also air interviews of musicians by other musicians, shows detailing how famous songs came to be and news programming focused on music and culture, according to Gus Wenner, Rolling Stone’s president and chief operating officer, who spoke exclusively to WSJ.

Rolling Stone has built a studio inside its Manhattan, New York offices to use for the channel, however the majority of the early content will be remote feeds from artists homes, due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

“Though Twitch is primarily known for its gaming community, it is really a platform for creators of all sorts,” Tracy Chan, Twitch’s vice president in charge of music said. “Gamers also have a lot of interests beyond gaming; many love music and are into sports.”

It continues a mass effort for the folks behind Twitch to bring more variety content to their twitch channels and stream offerings.

The latest ban was another over the course of the past year for the streamer, who is known for her interactive channel and interviews on stream and commands one of the most popular live VTube streams and VOD Vtube shows on the internet.

“It was not because of the word simp” CodeMiko explained, in an interview with Dot Esports. “It is a long story, but the short of it is, I messed up when I was chatting with a friend and fellow streamer and kind of got lost in the moment.”

CodeMiko has a return stream planned for February 5th, but went into detail as to why she was hit with the ban this time around.

“So I have this interview content and basically feature other streamers” she explained regarding the ban.

“During an interview, they often share things with me and send it to me to show on stream. So they will share it and I will put it on screen.

At this particular moment, we were talking about female harassment online and I asked her what was like the worst comment she had ever received. When I saw the email, it was pretty bad and was more like a threat than a comment. From my experience, threats are almost never from a user’s actual email address, but when I threw up the screenshot, that is basically what got me banned. I violated terms [of service] around privacy.”

Moving forward, CodeMiko is enlisting an account manager, and will focus on the innovative side of her content.

“I am getting myself an account manager and I think that will help a lot when it comes to communication with Twitch” she said. “Once I get one, I hope communication will go a lot smoother in the future. ”

“I want to focus more on the innovative side of my content and really push more in the direction of creating fun things to drive that live interaction, in terms of mini-games I can play with chat and the guests during our interviews” she continued. “I imagine it will be like my interviews but on steroids.

“Basically, I want to focus on adding more interactive aspects to chat that will help the humor of the interviews and situations within the interviews and just adding a lot of color to the content.

I am always super excited for new stuff. Currently, I was only working on interview content, but now, I am going to implement game show aspects to it as well. I have been going head-on with the live, interactivity part of it. I am planning my return stream to have big streamers that I have worked with and making it into a really fun event.

I am also just planning out my everyday content as well and it will have different things other than interviews.”

CodeMiko also talked about the impact VTubers have had on the streaming industry.

“I think it’s great! I really like the creative side of Twitch, and it is really exciting to see different content creators try new things and bring new, innovative content out because it just shows that you can do really cool things with just livestreaming.

I feel like it makes the future of entertainment in this livestreaming and digital format really exciting. So I hope it keeps expanding and more new things pop up on the creative side of Twitch.”

“He kept calling me horrible things and even dropped my address in order to terrify me even more. I tried to reason with him. After I refused to show my boobs, because he wouldn’t let me speak to my dad, he said he killed him.”

“Seconds after her said that he killed my dad, my Mod wrote in chat that he contacted my uncle who contacted my dad” she continued. He was fine, asleep when this occurred.

After hearing the news, I immediately hung up on him and called the police. I’m writing all this down because I was talking in German and I don’t want there to be any misunderstandings because this is quite serious.”

This isn’t the first time that she has had an incident with a stalker during a stream. Back in November, she begged a stalker to please stop after a number of pizzas were delivered to her home and a fake gas leak was reported, during one of her streams.

He hopes that the discussion in his stream can have a lasting, positive impact on viewers.

“When they actually learn the stuff that we teach, what they realize is that they don’t need me,” said Kanojia, who also says that what he is doing on Twitch isn’t therapy, as he does before each and every stream.

Knojia has received criticism for what they say seems like therapy, and NPR points out the following:

“When I got banned I was extremely surprised cause I’ve been doing bodypainting for a little over a month and a half with no issues from twitch moderation” DelightfullyDani told Sudairy in an exclusive interview.

“I even had applied for partner during this time. Had my channel properly reviewed, even though I was denied, twitch had seen my content and encouraged me to keep streaming and reapply in 2 weeks.

“So, the ban really caught me off guard cause I had complied with TOS as I always had.”

Dani points out that she followed Twitch’s rules regarding bodypaint content.

“Using artist grade pasties with two layers of latex on them” she explained. “Twitch TOS says “sufficient coverage can include a combination of latex and paint, artist pasties, or tape with opaque paint” which I had complied with. I had my chest fully painted before I was on cam.

I even went on BRB screens when I had to put my paint brush down to adhere to their “break” TOS policy which states “you cannot take long breaks while in body paint attire” so to avoid any issues I’d simply turn off my camera if I ate, vaped, or did anything that wasn’t directly painting.”

Dani feels that Twitch’s TOS is incredibly vague, echoing the concerns and issues experienced by a number of twitch streamers over the last few years.

“Their bodypainting TOS is like all of their TOS” Dani said. “Incredibly vague and not helpful at all. They don’t clarify what is “proper” coverage other than just saying to cover the nipple with a piece of material and paint over it with non transparent paint. Their “breaks” aren’t defined either as what they consider “too long” is it a minute limit? 5 minutes?

“We don’t know cause they never clarified. They also don’t clarify what painting is appropriate. Are certain themes or characters not allowed ? They don’t state it. All of their TOS is incredibly vague and I’ve made attempts at emailing for clarification and was told in a paraphrase “we cannot clarify if certain things are allowed until we see them. So once you stream it if we deem it against TOS when we see it, we’ll take the appropriate action” which as you can guess isn’t helpful in clarifying their already incredibly vague TOS.

Dani also believes that the way Twitch deals with bodypainters is problematic due to it’s inconsistency.

“The way they handle bans regarding bodypainters seems to be a sort of Russian roulette” she claims. “It may fly for one person, but another person is punished. Extremely inconsistent which leaves only more confusion and question on what is right and wrong. They also are super strict and harsher on bodypainters.

While a wardrobe malfunction on any normal stream may just warrant a 24 hour ban. A bodypaint malfunction almost instantly gets a permanent or 30 day suspension. Which you could argue why is one punished harsher than the other ? There has been a bias against the bodypainting community which is clear to see as many artists have received extremely harsh punishment for minor violations.”

Despite the issues, and the fallout, Dani believes that her channel should come back as she believes she really didn’t violate any of their rules.

“If my channel comes back which it should as I never violated any of their rules” Dani says.

“I plan to continue to bodypaint and do my standard content. I may start layering my coverage with pasties. Tape. AND latex. Or even just paint with a tube top or strapless bra instead because it isn’t worth the constant headaches of if today is the day twitch decides that a shadow they saw or a paint color is “inappropriate” to them today.”

While Dani’s experience has been unfortunate and has left her upset, she isn’t completely abandoning the Amazon streaming platform, but may branch her content out to YouTube as well.

“I’ve been debating perhaps taking my bodypaint content to YouTube to avoid the constant siege the bodypaint community seems to be under by twitch” Dani said.

“But I plan to stay on twitch and continue my daily streaming. I’m gonna stay because I refuse to run away and back down.

Dani believes that there should be a positive community for bodypainters on Twitch, which is helping her in deciding to stick with the platform when her channel is unbanned.

“I want there to be a safe area for artists to express themselves. Bodypainters have a right to share their creative process on twitch just like everyone else. I feel like backing down and running away will just let people think that it doesn’t belong on twitch. Bodypainting belongs on twitch and the community should be safe to stream just like everyone else is.”

According to Twitch COO Sara Clemens, the massively popular streaming platform will ban the words “simp,” “incel,” and “virgin”, when they are used as an insult, starting on January 22nd, 2021, as first reported by Esports insider Rod Breslau.

Clemens announced the new policy during the company’s town hall earlier this week, and a spokesman for Twitch commented on how the company will approach the difficult task of enforcing the new rules.

“We will take action against the use of terms like ‘simp,’ ‘incel’ or ‘virgin’ specifically when they are being used to negatively refer to another person’s sexual practices,” the spokesperson said, according to The Verge.

According to Variety, Twitch says it was “surprised” by the “sudden avalanche” of copyright takedowns that started back in May of this year, and in a brand new blog post Twitch is informing it’s streamers to stop playing recorded music on their streams unless it’s officially licensed.

“Most importantly, don’t play recorded music in your stream unless you own all rights in the music, or you have the permission of the necessary rights holder(s)” Twitch informed in the post.

“Doing this is the best protection for your streams going forward. If you’re unsure whether you own all the rights, it’s pretty likely you don’t. If you want to include recorded music in your stream, use a fully licensed alternative like Soundtrack by Twitch, or other rights cleared music libraries such as Soundstripe, Monstercat Gold, Chillhop, Epidemic Sound, and NCS.”

Twitch claims that it is “actively speaking with the major record labels about potential approaches to additional licenses that would be appropriate for the Twitch service” but adds that the “current constructs for licenses” would “make less sense for Twitch.”

“We were as surprised by this sudden avalanche of notifications as many of you were,” Twitch said in the post. “We also realized that we needed to provide streamers with more educational programs and content management tools to help you deal with this unprecedented number of notifications coming in all at once.”

Twitch apologized to their content creators for the angst that the DMC takedowns have caused, admitting that their warning email issued last month “didn’t include all the information that you’d typically get in a DMCA notification.”

“We could have developed more sophisticated, user-friendly tools a while ago. That we didn’t is on us,” it said. “And we could have provided creators with a longer time period to address their VOD and Clip libraries — that was a miss as well. We’re truly sorry for these mistakes, and we’ll do better.”

Twitch said users can use “fully licensed” alternatives like Soundtrack by Twitch, but that has even received some criticism from music organizations, who cited it in their October 22nd letter to the Amazon platform.

Twitch has also rolled out a new FAQ on DMCA and copyright for creators and added a “Copyright and Your Channel” Creator Camp page with upcoming live sessions to provide information and tips.

Per the report, along with the aforementioned, the National Music Publishers Association, the Music Managers Forum, the American Association of Independent Music, SAG-AFTRA and more than a dozen others collaborated on a letter sent to Twitch and their owner Amazon slamming them for their lack of licensing deals with many major music rights-holders.

The letter was reportedly addressed to Amazon founder/CEO Jeff Bezos, with Twitch CEO Emmet Shear on copy, and was obtained by Variety.

According to the report, the letter accuses Twitch of failing to secure proper synch and mechanical licenses for its recently launched Soundtrack tool, as well as “allowing and enabling its streamers to use our respective members’ music without authorization, in violation of Twitch’s music guidelines,” in addition to a number of other claims.

“Twitch appears to do nothing in response to the thousands of notices of music infringement that it has received nor does it currently even acknowledge that it received them, as it has done in the past,” the letter states.

Per Variety:

“We represent artists, songwriters, musicians, vocalists, managers, producers, audio engineers, major and independent labels and publishers, and many other professionals in all genres of music in the United States,” the letter begins. “We read with interest Twitch’s recent announcement regarding its Soundtrack tool.  According to Twitch, this tool gives Twitch’s users the ability to feature a curated library of licensed music in their live streams.[1] We appreciate that Twitch has acknowledged that it is good business to offer licensed music for use by its streamers, and we welcome that Twitch has started to enter into some agreements with rightsholders to provide licensed music for use by its streamers.

“However, we are confounded by Twitch’s apparent stance that neither synch nor mechanical licenses are necessary for its Soundtrack tool.  We are also deeply disappointed that Twitch continues to allow and enable its streamers to use our respective members’ music without authorization, in violation of Twitch’s music guidelines.[2]  We are further concerned that Twitch continues to host and widely make available unlicensed music on its platform despite the company’s announcements, most recently in June 2020, that it would remove such unlicensed music.[3]  Twitch appears to do nothing in response to the thousands of notices of music infringement that it has received nor does it currently even acknowledge that it received them, as it has done in the past.”

“Further,” the letter continues, “we are concerned by your responses to questions regarding licensing made during the House Judiciary Committee hearing on July 29, 2020.  We note that you failed to confirm whether Twitch has acquired any licenses to make copies of musical compositions or digital performances of any sound recordings on your platform.  You also failed to state what action Twitch is taking to prevent unauthorized copies and performances.

“Twitch’s neglect of the fundamental rights of musicians, songwriters, sound recording artists, and many others whose music is exploited on Twitch without due compensation stands in stark contrast to Twitch’s competitors and to the support of such interests extended by Amazon’s own Amazon Music services.”

“As Twitch uses music to grow its audience and shape its brand, the company owes creators more than the willful blindness and vague platitudes you offered during your Congressional testimony.  For working songwriters and performers, fair royalties on a growing platform like Twitch can literally be a matter of life and death – the difference between having a place to live and homelessness and having access to health care or being uninsured.  For others it’s the difference between being able to work as an artist or having to give up a lifetime of dreams.”

Many twitch streamers correctly point out that the system allows for further harassment and toxicity that they have worked hard to get rid of, adding that trolls often attack in droves.

While the feature can certainly be useful in the rare situation that someone is accidentally, or wrongfully, banned this seems to open the door for continued harassment and toxicity more than adding something to combat it.

Many streamers also posed the question as to why this feature was even needed, saying that people that were banned were banned for a specific reason.

Other streamers pointed out that this is just another way for people who are banned from a specific channel to continue to harass the channel.

The series will be an eight-episode title that will feature four guest each week that will discuss topics and delve into the challenges they face in their specific industry, which Day described as “frank and funny discussions” about what women go through in their respective fields.

Day has seen shifts in regards to the current diversity of the gaming industry and for women streamers as well.

“I certainly think we’re moving forward into a better place,” Day said. “I’ve seen a big shift into having more diverse storytelling, but I feel like the cliches still abound, and a lot of the people who are gatekeepers are very much locked into reinforcing cliches because they’re comfortable for audiences.”

“These easy-to-learn and fun-to-watch games let creators play with their fans, which is a great way to engage an audience,” said StreamElements CEO Doron Nir, according to Forbes. “It’s the influencers and not the games that have been driving the success of these titles, as illustrated by 2018’s Among Us skyrocketing up the charts simply because some top streamers decided to play an older game. While this movement will most likely lead to new party games, it’s a great opportunity for brands to look at their catalogs to see if an older game might fit in with the current trend and be worth reinvesting in.”

While those popular titles are growing, so is Twitch, which posted its first month-over-month rise during the month of August since April of this year, with 1.47 billion hours watched, topping the 1.42 billion mark reached back in April, and has Twitch seeing an impressive 57% growth year-over-year.

Games continue to dominate, but other categories such as cooking shows are seeing a bump in their popularity as well, as Twitch’s Food & Drink category is up 96% year-over-year.

Numbers show that Félix “xQc” Lengyel is the most popular streamer on Twitch, joined by  Alexandre “gAuLeS” Borba, Nick “NickMercs” Kolcheff, and Timothy “TimTheTatman” Betar at the top of those charts.

Following his retirement from rap, Logic inked an exclusive live-streaming deal with Amazon’s popular platform Twitch as he made the switch to being a full-time streamer.

Over the weekend, Logic took to his official Twitter page to criticize UMG for not letting streamers, such as Ninja, from using his music.

Furthermore, AMC said it partnered with Hyper RPG, a media company that specializes in livestreaming, to oversee technical production, creative assets, and next-level interactivity for their channel.

Amazon’s immensely popular streaming platform continues to evolve their twitch channels offerings, with a deeper focus on content outside of gaming, such as music, and now television shows.

From the questionable conduct from the US Army’s Esports Team, to the push for the revoking of access to streaming as an attempt to recruit via Navy content creators, the efforts have left a bad taste in the collective mouth of the community.

Now, the Navy is under fire for their actions on stream as well, according to Kotaku.

According to the report, during one of the Navy’s recent twitch streams one player donning a dark-colored avatar named themselves “Gamer Word,” which, per the report, is a meme that references the N-word.

While others laughed and joked about the reference to the slur, Navy streamer Brandon Chandler seemed to find it funny as well, and even went as far as to say the people he was playing with were his “close friends.”

It didn’t stop there. A player in the same match used the name “Japan 1945,” which is a reference to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki back in 1945. Another match took place later in the stream, and the players were then joined by someone calling themselves “Nagasaki”, which made another reference.

The Navy issued the following to Kotaku: “We recently had a stream of the game Among Us where three non-Navy affiliated users decided to use extremely inappropriate in-game usernames,” commander Lara Bollinger of the Navy’s public affairs office said in an email. “We do not condone those usernames and Navy Goats and Glory’s immediate response was not quick or correct. Our streamer should have immediately left the game and refused to play with users who were unapologetically inappropriate. The streamer’s reaction to the situation was unbecoming of a member of our team and he will no longer be streaming as a part of Goats and Glory. Additionally, we are re-evaluating how we vet users allowed to play with us on stream in an effort to ensure that this does not happen again.”

Poki being popular with a vtuber model is not the reason why there are many small, hardworking VTubers who don’t get recognition. People watch Poki because they’re Poki fans, vtuber or not. This just seems like unnecessary gatekeeping to me.

Per Dexerto, chat logs have surfaced with Destiny stating that “Twitch legal is emailing me telling me they’re revoking my Twitch partnership because of some unspecified ‘encouragement of violence’ using the platform.”

While nothing has been done at the time of this writing, it’s fair to assume that Destiny is at risk of losing his channel where he has over 500,000 followers.

The path to partner is challenging, and with the boom of influencer marketing, it is becoming more valuable to hit the verified checkmark on any platform you’re creating content on. According to Kotaku, Leafy was banned permanently from Youtube last month for repeatedly violating the company’s harassment policies after a series of videos about Twitch streamer Imane “Pokimane” Anys which kicked off a campaign on social media around her significant other.

Leafy also had issues with YouTuber Ethan “H3H3”.

Now he is off of Twitch as well.

“The safety of our community is our top priority, and we reserve the right to suspend any account for conduct that violates our rules, or that we determine to be inappropriate, harmful, or puts our community at risk,” Twitch said in an email to Kotaku.
